Sandy Draffen is a second career nurse. She worked in the business world for 22 years as a buyer for a manufacturing company before changing gears and becoming a registered nurse.
"Being a hospice nurse isn't for everyone," she said. "For me, it's a calling and so not about me."
The Nicaragua trip will be her first medical mission. She found out about it through her church, North Coast Calvary Chapel.
"It's important for people to share their skill with others less fortunate," Sandy said. "We need to give back. I am looking forward to being part of something that will improve the life of others."
She said she anticipates leaving the trip with a different perspective, although she doesn't know what it will be yet.
"I suspect it's likely to be profound," she said.
