Maria was one of our last five patients, and her surgery was completed on the third day.
Maria, 36, said she had been having painful and long periods for about three years. Each of her monthly periods lasted over a week, and often as long as 15 days.
Dr. Brody performed a D&C (Dilation and Curretage) and Endometrial Ablation on her to solve the problem. A D&C procedure is the scraping of the lining of the uterus to stop heavy bleeding, but it is only a temporary cure, and usually only lasts for a few months, Dr. Brody said. The Endometrial Ablation procedure with the Novasure device burns the lining of the uterus that sheds each month as a menstrual period. The burning causes the lining to scar and therefore not bleed. It is considered a permanent cure and has a 90 percent success rate in treating the patient's problem permanently, thereby avoiding the need for a hysterectomy.
Maria said she wouldn't have been able to get the surgery if it weren't for Med4Nicaragua because she lives a few hours away where there isn't a hospital. She said that her doctors kept giving her medication and putting off a surgery, but the medicine did little to no help.
She said she can speak for everyone that it's a widespread problem.
Doris, her sister, was at the clinic to pick Maria up. She described Maria as generous, nice, brave and heroic.
